A soldier falls prey to enemy troops. An evil executioner proposes a macabre game: the soldier must decide between dying hung or shot dead. But the executioner tells him first that he must pronounce a sentence and that, if it is true, he will die shot, but if it is false, he will die hanged.
How is it possible that the soldier can escape his sad fate?
The soldier responds:
- I will die hanged!
If this phrase is true, the convicted must die shot. But in that case it would be a false statement.
So, if it is false, it must die hung, but in that case it would be true. Therefore it could not be any option and the soldier was forgiven.
